January 2006 – Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan leads his first “Geography of Coffee” Study tour to
Nicaragua with a group of nine BSU students to visit fair-trade, conventional, and ecological
coffee farms and estates in Matagalpa, northern Nicaragua. Students observe coffee production
from the field to the cup, with an emphasis on the organization of cooperatives. They spend
time with small-scale farm families and actually participate in the harvest. 2007 - Dana Molher-Faria signed the President’s Climate Commitment.
January 2007 – Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan leads his second “Geography of Coffee” Study tour to Nicaragua with a group of nine BSU students.
Spring 2007 – James Hayes-Bohanan launches his Fair Trade Coffee tasting & speaking-intensive
“Secret Life of Coffee” second year seminar class. Students study coffee production and trade
throughout the world and compare fair-trade with other certification models. They also study
independent coffee shops as part of the coffee commodity chain and as nexuses of local culture. Spring 2008 – James Hayes-Bohanan continues his Fair Trade Coffee tasting & speaking-intensive
“Secret Life of Coffee” second year seminar class. In March of 2008, the Social Justice League held a mock- sweatshop in the Rondileau Campus Center foyer to simulate the horrible conditions of sweatshops that are prevalent throughout the world.
In March of 2008, the Social Justice League worked with BSU administration to ensure that all bookstore apparel will be made in sweatshop-free factories by entering BSU into the Worker Rights Consortium.

In the Spring of 2008, the Social Justice League hosts its First ever Fair Trade Fair where local vendors come to promote their organizations, sell their products, and educate BSU campus about ethical consumption and fair trade.

In the Fall of 2010, SJL brought former sweat shop worker Chie Abad to come speak about her experiences in a United States sweat shop.

In the Fall of 2010, SJL brought Witness for Peace speaker Kiado Cruz to BSU to speak about sustainable agriculture, the importance of supporting local food systems, and promoting fair and just international trade.
In December of 2010, the Social Movements class had President Mohler-Faria sign their petition for a Fair Trade BSU. This signature represented his support of making BSU a Fair Trade university.

In April of 2011, SJL hosted its 4th Annual Just Trade Fair & Fair Trade Coffee Tasting with James Hayes-Bohanans’ “Secret Life of Coffee” class. The annual nature of this well-attended event shows that students and faculty at BSU support the idea of Fair Trade and conscious consuming. This year’s just trade fair was bigger and better than ever, bringing in both students, professors, and community members.

Summer 2011 – James Hayes-Bohanan continues his Fair Trade Coffee tasting & speaking-intensive

In the Summer 2011, a member of the fair trade BSU steering committee (Katrina Delaney) put together a fair trade educational and action plan for BSU after receiving a summer research grant through BSU’s Center for Sustainability. This timeline is a product of that research.
